The Thief

With the wet season almost over, some birds has started their breeding preparation!! This Black-Naped Oriole(Oriolus chinensis) is certainly one of them. I saw this oriole keep going back to the same branch a few times. Not that there are insects nor fruiting on that tree but to steal the material needed for their nest building!

The oriole will use the bill to purposely got themselves entangled with the spider web, then try to 'hoover' (short flight and back to the same branch) and try to grab as much web as possible before flew off. Within 30 minutes while I was there, the birds repeated the process for 4 times!

Olive-Backed Sunbird

I saw another pair of birds busy building their nest and this round was the Olive-backed sunbird. This is the female sunbird (without the blue patch on their throat)

I don't know what this female bird is doing initially. Saw the bird peck on the fern that their nest attached too. After upload to the computer then I know the answer.The female sunbird is maintaining their nest by removing any potential intruder - including ants as seen on the photo above.

Chicks Sanitation

When birds hatched, they are more susceptible to disease than adult birds due to their underdeveloped immune system.

As such, sanitation is extremely important especially for chicks prior to feathering.

Mummy - "raise your butt & let me check!"

Mummy - "I got it!"

Yellow Vented Bulbul Feeding

Yellow-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus goiavier) is one of the most common bird in Singapore. Even it is so common, not many people have the chance to see how they feed their chicks and what they feed with. As with many other birds, seeds of Dillenia suffruticosa or commonly known as Simpoh Ayer is one of the main source of food for the chicks.

Spiders has been sighted quite regularly too.

At times, yellow-vented bulbul 'hi-jack' the food from spiders too. This bee was strangled on spiders web when it was fed to the chick.

New Chick On The Blog

I'm glad that I get to see another nestling hatched successfully in Singapore and this time round is a very beautiful Coppersmith barbet (Megalaima haemacephala).

After slightly more than a month of waiting, finally see the chick.

The chick is doing well and should fledge within a day or two.

Nestling Mania Started

Now that the monsoon is over, is now the nestling mania for birds in Singapore! There are so many sightings of bird nestlings every where.

This is the Black-napped Oriole that I have been reporting since last month.
