Day Trip to Khura Buri Town @ South Thailand

Not really a day trip but a stop over before our birding trip to Sri Phang Nga National Park. My guide pick me up at the Bangkok airport around 8pm the night before and we drove straight to Khura Buri at Phang Nga, Southern of Thailand.

After check-in to our resort, it was already 6.30am. We decided to go check out the local market and see we can get some breakfast before heading for our birding trip.

 The market is just across the street of where we stay and is already very bright at 6.30am

The scene like this is long gone in Singapore. Open air market is no longer available in Singapore. This really bring back my old memories when I was still a kid.

 From local deserts, cakes

 to fresh vegetables

 and cooked food. Just pick what you want.

 Fresh chicken from the village is available too.

 We bough some deep fried bananas as our snacks

 is so yummy!

 We also bought some pan cake freshly baked

We also get a bowl of noodle for our breakfast. With all this goodies, looks like birding has became a secondary objectives for our trip... what will I see later in the National Park?

Kent Ridge Park Before The Storm Coming

I can't remember when was the last time I visited Kent Ridge Park. It was a sunny day but the weather change rather quickly when I half way through my birding. 

Since Kent Ridge Park was on the elevated hill tops, it is a good workout cum birding place.

There are a number of shelters in the park that stay the way they are and looks like movies from the 60's. Kent Ridge Park is also a historical park where one of the last battles for Singapore was fought during World War II.

One of the attraction is the canopy walk. This must be the best spot of the park, must be very romantic after dark.

 Semakau can be seen on the other side of the park and also the very busy West Coast Port.

 With this thick ferns, this is the good area to look for tailor bird.

 A flying dragon! This lizard can fly (glide) from tree to tree.

Saw this Pied Triller on the canopy walk.

 There are lots of White Eye in the park.

 Not to mention Yellow Vented Bulbul.

Have not seen a Green Crested Lizard for some time. Is getting less common now as they has been displaced by the more aggressive Changeable lizard.

By the time I took this sunbird picture, the weather changed very quickly.

The wind was proof too strong for this tree to handle and it snap. Luckily no was was injured.

Migratory Birds Are Back to SBWR

With the arrival of September, so as the migratory birds. The waders usually start to come in from August. With the Hari Raya long week end, I decided to check out the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve.

To get to the reserve, we will need to cross the river through this main bridge. The weather today is good and perfect for a good birding trip.

The tide was high and this will means that I have higher chance to see the waders in a shorter distance. The birds are forced by the sea water to feed nearer to the shore.

Few Milky Storks rather stay dry high up on the tree branch.

From the Main Hide, saw a mixture of Milky Storks & Painted Storks feeding together.

 2 mud skippers swimming around instead of playing with mud...   :)

Yes. The migratory birds are back at the reserve.

 This Black Tail Godwit decided not to join the Red Shanks.

Hiding among the Whimbrels, not that difficult to spot the not so common Eurasian Curlew. The Curlew is much bigger than Whimbrels, can you tell the difference?

While walking over to the Mangrove Boardwalk, saw this squirrel lazying on the railing.

Follow the loud call, not difficult to pin point the location of Cicada.

I was told there are 2 reasons why Mullet jump out of water. They are either trying to escape from predator or they are taking in oxygen from the air above the water.

Saw something big swimming in the water but I have no idea what is it perhaps this is the one that caused alarm to the mullets.
